When is the Augsburg Oktoberfest 2027?
The City of Augsburg has scheduled the Herbstplärrer, the festival most visitors call the Augsburg Oktoberfest, for Friday 27 August to Sunday 12 September 2027, 17 days. The spring edition runs from Easter Sunday, 28 March, to Sunday 11 April 2027. Both dates come from the city's official Plärrer page and its 2027 call for showmen.
The dates fit the pattern of every recent edition. The autumn Plärrer always opens on a Friday in the last third of August and runs 17 days to a Sunday in early September. The spring Plärrer always opens on Easter Sunday and runs 15 days.
| Year | Spring Plärrer (Easter) | Autumn Herbstplärrer |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 9 to 23 April | 25 August to 10 September |
| 2024 | 31 March to 14 April | 23 August to 8 September |
| 2025 | 20 April to 4 May | 22 August to 7 September |
| 2026 | 5 to 19 April | 28 August to 13 September |
| 2027 | 28 March to 11 April | 27 August to 12 September |
What is not out yet for 2027: the opening-day programme, the fireworks schedule and the beer prices. The city publishes the dates more than a year ahead in its call for stallholders, while the festival's own site, augsburger-plaerrer.de, posts the hours and the programme closer to opening. Beer prices tend to surface in the local press shortly before each edition: in 2026, the spring prices were reported on 25 March, eleven days before the festival opened.
What is the Augsburger Plärrer?
The Plärrer is the largest Volksfest in Bavaria-Swabia, held twice a year on a permanent fairground in central Augsburg. The autumn edition is the Herbstplärrer; the spring one is the Osterplärrer, which the city calls the Frühjahrsplärrer. Together they draw up to 1.2 million visitors a year across more than 70 stands, tents and rides.
The format will look familiar if you have seen any Bavarian beer festival. Two large tents with live music and long shared tables, Hendl and Schweinshaxe and pretzels the size of your head, and a fairground wrapped around it. Plenty of people wear Tracht.
The difference is scale and who shows up. Munich's Oktoberfest drew around 7.4 million visitors in 16 days in 2026, a record. The 2026 Herbstplärrer counted about 360,000 guests, according to the city. The Plärrer is a regional festival that locals attend, and that shapes everything about the experience, including the price.
How much cheaper is the Plärrer than Oktoberfest?
About $3 a liter, or roughly 19 percent, on 2026 prices. A Maß cost $13.43 (€12.00) in the Binswanger tent and $14.44 (€12.90) in Festzelt Schaller in 2026. At Oktoberfest 2026 the same liter ran $16.57 to $17.80 (€14.80 to €15.90) depending on the tent. Both Augsburg tents held their prices flat from spring to autumn 2026.
These are 2026 prices. The 2027 prices for both festivals are announced shortly before each one opens, and nobody has published them yet. Dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rate of 23 October 2026 ($1.1193 per euro).
The full comparison:
| Augsburg Plärrer | Munich Oktoberfest | |
|---|---|---|
| Dates 2027 | 27 Aug to 12 Sep | 18 Sep to 3 Oct |
| Maß of beer (2026 price) | $13.43 to $14.44 (€12.00 to €12.90) | $16.57 to $17.80 (€14.80 to €15.90) |
| Beer tents | 2 | 14 large, plus smaller |
| Total tent seats | 5,700 | tens of thousands |
| Visitors | up to 1.2M a year, both editions | ~7.4M in 16 days (2026) |
| Reservation | Rarely needed | Best 2026 slots gone by February |
| Entry | Free | Free |

Three dollars a liter is not life-changing on one beer. Over a long afternoon for four people it is the difference between a round and a meal. The bigger saving is the one that does not appear on any menu: you are not paying Munich festival rates for a bed, and you are not competing for a table that was booked in February.
Worth knowing if you are watching costs generally: the fees that don't show up in the advertised hotel price tend to bite hardest during event weeks, wherever you are.
What does a night in Augsburg cost? (price check)
On the Herbstplärrer's first Saturday, 28 August 2027, the cheapest Augsburg room for two was $58 and the median of the top picks $118, with no festival premium visible yet. On the middle Saturday of Oktoberfest, 25 September 2027, Augsburg's top picks sat at $128 against $661 in Munich.
These figures are Navoy's own check on book.navoy.io, 23 October 2026, 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night, in USD. Prices move, so treat them as a snapshot ten months out, not a quote.
| Saturday night, 2027 | City | Cheapest | Top-picks median |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 Aug (Plärrer opening weekend) | Augsburg | $58 | $118 |
| 16 Oct (ordinary Saturday) | Augsburg | $70 | $120 |
| 25 Sep (Oktoberfest) | Augsburg | $79 | $128 |
| 25 Sep (Oktoberfest) | Munich | $185 | $661 |
Two readings. Augsburg barely moves: its top picks on the Plärrer weekend cost about the same as on an ordinary October Saturday. And if Oktoberfest is the plan, a bed in Augsburg saved about $533 per room per night on the top-picks median. Check Augsburg hotels for your own dates before the festival weeks fill.
Which beer tents are at the Augsburg Plärrer?
Two, both family-run. The Binswanger Zelt seats 3,200 and is operated by the Hatzelmann and Kempter families; a Maß cost $13.43 (€12.00) there in 2026. Festzelt Schaller seats 2,500, is run by the Held family, and poured at $14.44 (€12.90) in 2026. Each takes reservations through its own booking system, but walk-ins are realistic on most days.
That is the whole tent list. After Oktoberfest's fourteen large tents it sounds thin, and it changes how you plan: there is no tent-hopping strategy here, no working out which one suits your group. You pick one, or you try both.

The walk-in situation is the real advantage. At Oktoberfest, reservations for 2026 opened as early as December 2025, and the best weekend evening tables were gone by the end of February. Plan on the same race for 2027. Munich regulations keep a quarter of large-tent seats unreserved on weekdays so walk-ins stay possible, but you are queuing for them. In Augsburg, arriving without a booking on a weekday afternoon is normal.
If you want a table for a group on a Friday or Saturday night, book ahead anyway. Local demand is real, even without the international crowd.
What are the Plärrer opening hours, and what happens on which day?
In 2026 the Plärrer opened 12:00 to 23:00 Monday to Thursday, 12:00 to 23:30 on Friday, 10:30 to 23:30 on Saturday and 10:30 to 23:00 on Sundays and holidays. The 2027 hours have not been posted yet; check augsburger-plaerrer.de before you go.
| Day | Hours (2026) |
|---|---|
| Monday to Thursday | 12:00 to 23:00 |
| Friday | 12:00 to 23:30 |
| Saturday | 10:30 to 23:30 |
| Sunday and holidays | 10:30 to 23:00 |
The 2026 autumn edition opened at 16:00 on its first Friday, with the official Fassanstich at 18:00 in Festzelt Schaller by Oberbürgermeister Dr. Florian Freund, followed on Saturday by the Plärrerumzug parade through the city.
Two things worth planning around, based on the 2026 programme. Fridays end with fireworks, which is the busiest and best-looking night to be there. Wednesdays are family afternoons, with reduced prices and offers aimed at families and children, so it is the calmest day to bring kids.
Closing time is earlier than you might expect if Oktoberfest is your reference point, and German festivals mean it. When the tent closes, it closes.
What about the Easter Plärrer 2027?
The spring Plärrer runs from Easter Sunday, 28 March, to Sunday 11 April 2027, according to the City of Augsburg. It is the same fairground and the same two tents, and it is the earlier chance to go if late August does not suit your calendar.
In 2026 the spring edition opened on Easter Sunday with the Fassanstich at 17:00 in the Binswanger tent. The tents charged the same $13.43 (€12.00) and $14.44 (€12.90) a Maß as they later did in the autumn, and local press reported those prices eleven days before opening. If 2027 follows the same rhythm, the spring prices will surface in the second half of March.
Easter week is a busy travel week across Germany, so book your bed earlier than you would for an ordinary spring weekend.
How do you get to the Augsburg Plärrer?
Take tram line 4 to the stop called "Plärrer", named after the festival grounds. During the festival it runs every 7.5 minutes on weekdays until about 18:30, according to the festival site. If you arrive by train, Augsburg Hauptbahnhof and Oberhausen station are both about a 15-minute walk from the grounds. The address is Plärrer, 86153 Augsburg.
Coming from Munich, Augsburg is 30 to 40 minutes by regional train or ICE, and trains run late. That makes a day trip from Munich genuinely easy, and it is the one place where the two festivals connect logistically even though their dates do not.
Do not drive. It is a beer festival, parking is limited, and the tram stops at the grounds.
Search flights to Munich MUC, the nearest airport, then it is a short train hop to Augsburg.
Should you go to the Plärrer or Oktoberfest?
You are choosing between them, not combining them. In 2027 the Herbstplärrer ends Sunday 12 September and Oktoberfest opens Saturday 18 September, six days apart with no overlap, the same gap as in 2026. Pick the Plärrer if you want cheaper beer, no reservation stress and a local crowd. Pick Oktoberfest if you want the event everyone has heard of.
Let me be straight about the trade-off, because most pages that call the Plärrer an "Oktoberfest alternative" skip it.
The Plärrer is a local festival. English is not widely spoken in the tents, signage is German, and there is very little tourist infrastructure built around visitors who do not speak the language. Nobody is going to switch to English at your table by default. If that sounds like an obstacle, it is a real one. If it sounds like the point, you will have a better time than you would in Munich.
And Oktoberfest is Oktoberfest. More than seven million people, fourteen large tents, an atmosphere the Plärrer does not try to match. If it is on your list, go to it, and read our guide to sleeping in Augsburg while commuting to Munich for Oktoberfest first, because the accommodation math there is brutal.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Augsburg Oktoberfest 2027?
The Herbstplärrer, Augsburg's autumn beer festival, is scheduled by the City of Augsburg for 27 August to 12 September 2027. The spring Plärrer runs 28 March to 11 April 2027, starting on Easter Sunday. The festival site posts the 2027 hours and programme closer to opening.
Is the Augsburg Plärrer cheaper than Oktoberfest?
Yes, by about $3 a liter on 2026 prices. A Maß cost $13.43 (€12.00) in the Binswanger tent and $14.44 (€12.90) in Festzelt Schaller, against $16.57 to $17.80 (€14.80 to €15.90) at Oktoberfest 2026. The 2027 prices are not out yet. Entry is free at both. The larger saving is accommodation, since Augsburg is not absorbing seven million festival visitors.
Do you need a reservation for the Augsburg beer tents?
Usually not. Walk-ins are realistic on weekdays and most afternoons, which is the main practical difference from Oktoberfest, where the best 2026 tables were booked out by February. For a group on a Friday or Saturday evening, reserve through the tent's own booking system.
Can you visit both the Plärrer and Oktoberfest on one trip?
Not on a normal-length trip. The Herbstplärrer ends 12 September 2027 and Oktoberfest opens 18 September 2027, six days later. There is no overlap, so you are looking at two separate trips or a stay of nearly three weeks.
Is the Augsburg Plärrer worth visiting if you don't speak German?
Yes, but go in knowing it is a local festival. English is not widely spoken in the tents and signage is German, so you get less hand-holding than in Munich. Ordering a beer and finding a seat takes very little German, and the atmosphere is friendly.
